Once
thought to be the game of kings, as well as a symbol of royal wealth and
extravagance, the game of polo has come to be a beloved pastime for generations
of nobility, and among its top players, is none other than HRH, the Prince of
Wales, Charles. Though the game dates back to ancient Persia, its modern
iteration is credited to the British, who are considered as its founders.
Charles has been a passionate lover of polo since the tender
age of 13, when he was admitted to the Household Cavalry's Training Regiment
and first experienced the fast-paced and strategic match up of groom and horse.
Back then, it piqued his passions and ever since, polo has been an indelible
part of his life.
As an accomplished polo player, Charles participated in many
tournaments in the 1970s, primarily in England and Spain. The Prince also is
credited with developing an Argentina/British team in 1985. The team, dubbed
“The Golden Spurs”, was formed as part of Charles' charitable foundation and
was formed to bridge the gap between the two countries.
In the 1970s and 1980s, King Charles was known for his skill
and athleticism on the polo field. He played in numerous matches was a member
of several polo teams. He even started his own team, called the "Highgrove
Stud," which was named after his country estate in Gloucestershire.
Throughout the years, Charles has increased his involvement
in the sport, becoming a shareholder in the Royal County of Berkshire Polo
Club, and chairing meetings of the Hurlingham Polo Association, the governing
body for the sport in the UK.
He is known for his dedication to the sport, and is widely respected as one of the most skilled and passionate polo players of his generation. So, it can be easily said that King Charles III has a real passion for polo.
